Our sheep

Finnsheep
We specialize in raising purebred Finnsheep, also known as Finnish Landrace sheep. Originating in Finland, this breed is well adapted to our cold northern climate and boreal forest vegetation here in northwestern Ontario. Our lamb meat is lean and tender. Because our lamb is mainly grass-fed, it has a delicate flavour unlike lamb that is raised on a grain-based diet.
Aspen Croft Heritage Farm

Finnsheep are well known for their high lambing rate - we often get triplets and quadruplets from our ewes.  We’ve even heard that this breed can have as many as 7 in a litter!   We select for strong mothering traits, good milk production, high lambing rates, and calm (even friendly!) disposition.  One of our breeding lines is selected primarily for fleece quality. Our breeding stock includes black piebald and white individuals.

Finnsheep fleece has a nice lustre and ranges from medium to very soft.  It has a well defined crimp and felts very well.  Finnsheep fleece is ideal for felt-making as well as hand spinning.

We are experimenting with crossbreeding our Finn ram with Arcott, Suffolk and Romney ewes.  Thus far we have been very pleased with the results.

We’re sorry... Aspen Croft Heritage Farm is no longer operating.  We had several successful years of operation but have decided for personal reasons to change directions.

We thank all of our loyal customers and dozens of generous volunteers who helped make Aspen Croft such a special place over the years.
